On Tuesday 19th February, EPAS (European Parliament Ambassador School) team organized an inspiring event dedicated to raising awareness about the human rights of people with disabilities.
The event brought together students, educators, and distinguished guest speakers to discuss the current situation, the progress made, the role and the contribution of the European Council and the steps that still need to be taken to ensure inclusivity and equal opportunities for all.
Students from Spain and Sweden also took part in the event to discuss the human rights of people with disabilities in their respective countries. They shared insights on the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, the policies in place to support them, and the progress being made toward greater inclusion. They highlighted differences and similarities in how their countries approach accessibility, education, and employment rights, fostering a meaningful exchange of ideas and best practices.
Our EPAS students showcased their dedication through well-researched presentations, shedding light on the daily challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. They provided insightful facts and figures on accessibility, discrimination, and social inclusion while also discussing the various measures implemented by the European Council to safeguard the rights of disabled individuals. Their projects emphasized the importance of policy-making and societal change in fostering a more inclusive Europe.
A highlight of the event was the presence of guest speakers who shared their personal experiences and expertise: Mr. Giannis Tsoubris our PE teacher, basketball coach and founder and coordinator of “Jump ball of love”, an innovative volunteer basketball teaching program for Special Education children, promoting their co-education with other children and fostering acceptance by eliminating all forms of differentiation, both on and off the court”, Ms Georgia Kyritsoopoulou, mobility-orientation and everyday skills instructor (KEAT), Ms. Leda Kostopoulou, psychologist (KEAT), Mr. Konstantinos Hatzi, university student who is visually impaired and shared his personal eperiece with the students captivating the audience , Ms. Lemonia Koumaki, member of the GA OMKE, and Ms. Elisabeth Poulaki, Greek Sign Language Interpreter who talked about the education and the rights of hearing impaired people. They provided invaluable perspectives on communication barriers, independence, and the essential role of support systems.
Adding to the significance of the event, a distinguished Paralympic champion, Mr Thanasis Tsivilis, Vice President of the Greek Paralympic Committee graced the gathering, sharing their journey of perseverance, triumph, and advocacy for the rights of athletes with disabilities. Their speech resonated deeply with attendees, emphasizing the need for equal opportunities in sports and the broader societal implications of inclusivity in various fields.
The event was a remarkable success, encouraging students to actively engage in promoting human rights for all. It served as a powerful reminder that true progress lies in collective efforts, policy advancements, and a shift in societal attitudes toward people with disabilities.
